Background of the Study

Course registration is an essential academic process in universities, allowing students to enroll in courses based on their academic requirements and schedules. Efficient course registration ensures proper academic planning, streamlines student record management, and enhances overall administrative efficiency (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023). However, in many Nigerian universities, including Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), course registration is often marred by inefficiencies such as long queues, system downtimes, data loss, and human errors. These challenges hinder students' ability to register for courses seamlessly and create administrative burdens for university staff.

At UDUS, the current course registration process is predominantly paper-based or relies on outdated online systems that experience frequent downtimes and technical glitches. Many students struggle with accessibility issues, leading to delays and last-minute rushes that strain administrative resources (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, manual processing increases the risk of data entry errors, misplaced records, and unauthorized alterations, which can affect students' academic progress.

With the rapid digital transformation in education, universities worldwide are adopting automated course registration portals to enhance efficiency, reduce administrative workload, and provide students with seamless access to their academic records. A well-designed course registration portal ensures a user-friendly interface, real-time data processing, and secure storage of student records (Olawale & Musa, 2023). By integrating advanced database management and user authentication mechanisms, universities can eliminate registration bottlenecks, improve record accuracy, and enhance student experience.

Given the limitations of the existing course registration system at UDUS, this study proposes the development of a Course Registration Portal tailored to meet the needs of the institution. The proposed system will automate course registration, reduce administrative burdens, and provide students with a seamless and efficient registration experience.

Statement of the Problem

The traditional course registration system at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is inefficient and prone to various challenges that affect both students and administrative staff. The current process involves long queues, delays, and frequent system failures, making it difficult for students to register for courses on time (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023). Many students face difficulties accessing the system due to limited server capacity, leading to overcrowding at ICT centers and unnecessary delays.

Additionally, the reliance on manual or semi-automated systems increases the risk of errors in student records. Cases of missing or incorrect course registrations are common, causing academic complications for students and requiring administrative interventions to resolve disputes (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). Furthermore, the absence of a real-time validation mechanism means that students often register for courses they are not eligible for, leading to issues during examinations and graduation processing.

Another major issue is the lack of integration between the course registration system and other academic management systems within the university. Without a centralized and automated approach, students and lecturers experience delays in accessing up-to-date course enrollment data, affecting lecture planning and academic scheduling (Ogunleye & Salisu, 2024).

To address these challenges, this study proposes the development of a Course Registration Portal that will provide a seamless, secure, and efficient platform for students to register for courses. The system will be designed to eliminate delays, enhance accuracy, and improve the overall registration experience at UDUS.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and develop an automated Course Registration Portal for Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, to improve efficiency and accessibility.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the portal in reducing administrative workload and eliminating registration errors.

  3. To assess student and staff satisfaction with the usability and functionality of the proposed course registration system.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major challenges students face during course registration at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto?

  2. How can an automated Course Registration Portal enhance the efficiency and accuracy of course registration?

  3. What are the potential benefits of integrating an online registration portal with existing academic management systems?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of an automated Course Registration Portal will significantly reduce delays and errors in course registration.

  2. There is a positive correlation between the adoption of an online course registration system and administrative efficiency in UDUS.

  3. An integrated and user-friendly course registration portal will improve student satisfaction and engagement in the registration process.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it introduces an innovative solution to address the inefficiencies in course registration at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. By leveraging digital automation, the proposed Course Registration Portal will enhance accessibility, reduce administrative workload, and improve data accuracy. The system will benefit students by providing a user-friendly and seamless registration experience, while administrators will experience reduced paperwork and improved record management. Additionally, lecturers will have real-time access to student enrollment data, enabling better academic planning. This research also contributes to the growing body of knowledge on digital transformation in higher education administration.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the development and implementation of a Course Registration Portal for Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The research will focus on evaluating the portal’s usability, efficiency, and impact on the course registration process. Data collection will be restricted to students, university administrators, and IT staff within the institution. The study will not cover other universities or external academic management systems beyond UDUS.
